Frivolous Costumes Make Little Girls Happy

June 7, 2011

Family, ZArchive (Old Blog)

One thing about little girl, they love to dress up.  The more frivolous the costume, the better it is.

My sister and I had one dress that we just loved to dress up in the most.  My recollection was that it was silky feeling with a stiff netting around the skirt.  It was long and elegant and just the thing two little girls could play at pretend with all kinds of stories.

I had no idea that it was actually an old dress of my mother’s until I saw it in a family album she put together for my daughter.

I think she looks like a fairytale princess in this picture.  My parents were newly married and they were going to a dance together.  She’d wanted to go so badly but didn’t have money to buy the dress needed for an evening of fun.  At that time of her life, it was simply too frivolous.  Her mother-in-law and aunt-in-law (my paternal grandmother and her sister, my great-aunt) bought it and shipped it to her.  She was so surprised and so grateful for their generosity.

I was happy to have hours playing with the dress and even happier to find out the true story behind this beautiful dress.  As a child, I had no idea it was a much loved and sentimental item for her for many years.  Can you believe how young they are here?

Word for tomorrow – HUSBAND.  THAT WILL BE A FUN ONE :)

That is a beautiful dress. No wonder you both loved it. I know those war years were tough but there is so much romance in the pictures of people dressed up in that era it almost makes me want to turn back time.

Apparently my Dad did not want to go the dance, which I think contributed to their not having money for her to buy a dress. My grandmother and great-aunt did not agree. It is to this day a wonderful memory for my mother of how much her mother-in-law and new aunt loved her.
