For me, it’s way too easy to be oblivious to events around me. Work, fatigue, stress, and inattentiveness all contribute to days flying by without me noticing them.
One of my goals for this year has been to reconsider my routines. One of the routines I’ve experimented with is celebrating other anniversaries.
I’ve been with limited success on this – I’ve tried writing in my journal (first day of spring), having a moment of silence (9/11), just going outside and paying attention (first day of fall). It’s been okay, but not memorable. And I barely remembered to do what I intended or forgot it altogether (Memorial Day, first snowfall).
I miss the church celebrating some of these days – the patriotic hymns in early July, Mother’s Day & Father’s Day sermons, recognition of our military for Memorial Day, and songs of thankfulness at Thanksgiving. A number of churches no longer even do Thanksgiving Day services, which I think is unfortunate.
For now, I’m creating a list of what I want to remember. Next year, I’m considering putting together a photo album that includes a short write-up of the day – either what it meant to me, what I did on that day, it’s significance for the year. I’m not sure that idea will work either, but I would like to notice more of my life and events, even the small ones.
Today’s picture was taken during my daily walk on a super special day. It’s not the event itself, but it does help me remember what happened to make it a special day.

Such a clever idea! It reminds me of something here in the archives, where one member of a family kept a 5-year diary. Each day has 5 entries, one for each consecutive year, so the history of that day gets recorded over the period. I think they still make them, but I’m not sure. I always thought it would be neat to try, but I’ve never been a good journal keeper.
And I love the picture! Just looking at it brings a sense of peace.
Happy Monday!

Thanks for the compliment! I’m glad you liked the picture. I tried that five year journal, but those few lines just were not enough for me. I do try to record things in my regular diary, such as the first redwing blackbird (spring is here) and when I noticed they left (fall is coming). The first robin of spring is good too – one more snowstorm and then it’s spring. You have to see robins shivering in snow :)

I have tried this year to remember special days and to celebrate them. I got as far as Valentine’s Day, and failed. April came with all of the tornadoes and it kinda stole our fire. Don’t get me wrong, our anniversary was special as were our birthdays, but the celebrations were very low key. For us our other ‘anniversary,’ if you will, is July the 3rd. It is the day, three years ago, that we first arrived in North Alabama and pulled into the drive of our new home!

The tornadoes sure did steal your fire. July 3 is a great anniversary for you though – you might not be teaching as you like, but you’ve sure made a nice life for yourself in Alabama.
